Shelby and I wanted to thank you for the arrival of his goodies. I gave him the two little samples of beef liver. He actually licked his lips. The sample package did not have the name of the product. I would like to know so I can order him some more. He will not eat any treats purchased at the pet stores - only the ones that I have purchased from you. Thank you again for your prompt delivery and the beautiful lavender bag. I have almost worn out the first one you sent me. They are so perfect for Shelby's traveling bags. He needs almost as much luggage as I do!!

Thank you very much for the Kruncheros, the lavendar bag with treats and the thank you card for Shelby. The Kruncheros were a BIG hit as were the other little treats. I will be trying the dog food sample this week. A lovely package that we both appreciated. I also received notice from Fed Ex that the Skamper Ramp has been shipped. As soon as I get it installed then Shelby gets his first swimming lesson.

Cocoa Mulch is Toxic to Dogs
Cocoa Mulch is a soil mulching product sold by many hardware and garden stores. It is the by-product of processing cocoa beans for chocolate. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey’s.
Coco Mulch has a very strong smell of chocolate which can attract dogs. This mulch can be very to toxic depending on the amount consumed and the size of the dog.
(From ConsumerReports.org Home & Garden)
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Some dogs are attracted by the mulch's chocolate aroma, and according to a warning from the ASPCA in 2003, "Eaten by a 50-pound dog, about 2 ounces of cocoa bean mulch may cause gastrointestinal upset; about 4.5 ounces, increased heart rate; about 5.3 ounces, seizures; and over 9 ounces, death."
Caution about other mulches and fertilizers:
Many “organic” and “earth friendly” fertilizers on the market today contain fish and other animal by-products that attract cats and dogs. These fertilizers can also contain other ingredients that can be very harmful to these animals.

Freeze Dried Dog Food and Treats
One big benefit of freeze dried dog food is that they don’t contain any grains. They are either 100% meat or a combination of meat and vegetables. The dry dog foods and treats in the past have always used wheat or other grains as the main ingredient. Grains are very inexpensive and can be mixed with smaller amounts of other items to add protein, fat and supplements. Unfortunately, many dogs have allergies to wheat, corn or other grains. We have been conditioned to think that grains are a natural food for dogs but they’re not.
What’s the Objective?
The objective in freeze drying is to remove the water without damaging the structure or composition of the food. The food will be restored to very near its original quality, texture, flavor and smell when water is added back (rehydrated). Removing the water will keep the food from spoiling for longer periods of time. Bacteria and enzymes are ineffective and can’t spoil the food.
Since most foods are 80 to 90 percent water, removing the water will significantly reduce the weight and the volume. It takes less space to store these items and they will last a long time in storage. Needless to say they are much lighter to transport saving shipping costs and especially nice if they’re in your backpack. These are great to take with you on a trip if you like taking your dog along as well. The freeze dried food is so easy and convenient to use on a trip.
Freeze Drying Compared to Dehydration
Dehydration uses heat to help evaporate the water in the food. This type of evaporation process tends to change the shape and structure and breaks down the material. This method doesn’t remove all of the moisture which reduces the shelf life of the food and it does not reconstitute back to the original composition. The freeze drying method takes longer than the heated dehydration method but removes all of the moisture with very little change to the structure of the ingredients.
It’s Called Sublimation
Freeze drying uses a process called sublimation. This will let ice change to a vapor (gas) without first having to change to a liquid. This is accomplished by controlling the temperature and atmospheric pressure. Consider freeze drying a piece of meat. The meat is first frozen and then placed in the freeze dryer which is a temperature controlled vacuum chamber. As the vacuum is increased the temperature is controlled to keep a condition for sublimation.
Types of Freeze Dried Products for Dogs
The freeze dried dog food and treats are offered in two types of products. One type of product is 100% meat while the other type is a combination of meat and vegetables. The solid meat products can be used dry as treats or used as a nice topping to your dogs regular meal. The combination meat and vegetables are rehydrated with warm water for about ten or fifteen minutes. This can be used as a complete meal that has high protein, low fat and good natural ingredients. This is great for dogs that need to watch their weight.

What are Tocopherols?
We are always watchful for any preservatives that are used in dog foods and treats. Some of these preservatives are definitely not good for dogs.
Preservatives are being used to retard the spoilage of food products. Manufacturers are always looking for ways to extend the shelf life of their products. Shelf life includes warehousing, time at the distributors and time at the store. These products contain ingredients that will spoil from oxidation as we have all witnessed in our own refrigerators. If you can retard the oxidation, you can retard the spoilage.
Ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative and considered a carcinogenic. While the FDA currently allows only a very small amount (.5 to 5 ppm) in human consumed foods, it allows large amounts (150 ppm) in pet food products. And when you consider that dogs are smaller than humans, we consider this amount of preservatives to be too high for our furry friends.
BHA, short for Butylated Hydroxyanisole, and BHT, Butylated Hydroxytoluene, are also artificial preservatives and have been shown to produce health problems for dogs.
Herbert Evans and Katherine Bishop of UC Berkeley discovered vitamin E in 1922. It is a fat-soluble vitamin and an antioxidant. This means that fat ingredients can absorb this antioxidant and retard it from oxidation. Antioxidants are also very healthy. It protects cells against the effects of free radicals, which are potentially damaging to life processes. Free radicals can damage cells and contribute to development of many types of illnesses and disease. Vitamin E can also help boost the immune functions.
Tocopherol is a vitamin E that is used as a “natural preservative” and also provides beneficial health results when used in food products for both humans and pets. I would think that any manufacturer would consider a tocopherol as a “win – win” solution. Tocopherol is an ingredient that not only retards spoilage, it also is a health benefit.
Tocopherols is one of the few preservatives that we will allow in our “specially selected dog treats”. We will continue to investigate new treats and always check the ingredients.

Why Wheat Free Dog Treats?
Wheat, corn and/or soy are usually the main ingredients used in making dog treats that are now known to contribute to allergies in dogs. Many dog lovers are finding that these ingredients rank very high on the list for contributing to irritating allergies. This may cause dogs to scratch and itch and even can produce redness and tearing in their eyes. Many of us have ignored these habits thinking it’s just a normal thing for dogs to scratch but if your dog doesn’t have fleas then it’s not the case. Dogs itch and scratch because something is irritating them.
If you have a dog with these “normal?” habits, first try eliminating wheat, corn and soy from their diets. If you don’t see a reduction in the scratching in a few days then see a veterinarian because it could be an allergy reaction to something else or due to some other causes.
We’re seeing more and more dog treat products with no wheat, corn or soy and the producers are publishing this on the packaging. Bakeries are substituting oats, barley, spelt, potatoes, carrots and other ingredients that don’t seem to be as great a cause for allergies for dogs.
There are also dog treats that are in the form of jerky. Many of the new jerky products are not the hard, dried pieces that are hard to chew and digest but are baked and produce a soft easy to chew treat. They don’t contain any grains. Some have added vitamins and other supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin.
Some dog lovers are avoiding grains altogether which is creating more interest in “freeze dried” food products for pets. These tend to be more expensive because there are no inexpensive ingredients such as grains. These products usually come in two varieties; 100% meat or a combination of meat and vegetables. The 100% meat can be chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, salmon or duck and are usually cut into chunks that can be given as a treat without having to add water. These freeze dried meats can also be rehydrated with water and added to cooked vegetables or other ingredients. The combination freeze dried meat and vegetables can be used as a complete meal. These are also great when you’re traveling or camping out. They have a long shelf life which makes them ideal for the emergency locker as well.
And check out the list of ingredients on all those items your giving your dog, it could make a big difference in their overall health and wellbeing. Remember, if you can’t pronounce some of those ingredients, then it is a good bet that it’s not good for your dog.
